Foreign Body in Brain

Phew, now we’ve got a run of foreign body lodgements in other parts of the body.

20th December 2004, Vancouver, Canada

A 49-year-old man presented at the emergency department of a local hospital complaining of a minor headache and some eye swelling.

He also had a small cut on his cheek. He reported being punched in the eye around six hours earlier. Despite his injuries, the man was alert and had no signs of neurological deficit.

Doctors performed a CT scan of the man’s head and were surprised to find that it showed a cylindrical shaped foreign body lodged in his brain. The man required surgery to remove the foreign body, which revealed itself to be a 10.5cm long paintbrush. The brush had penetrated from the left orbit of the man’s eye to the right thalamus.

Fortunately, the man made a complete recovery from his ordeal. How did the brush get into the man’s brain? We can only assume it was through the initial assault or perhaps a fall after the assault.

We hope this fella drank the beer first …

A man who inserted a beer bottle into his anus, wide-end first, was admitted to the emergency room of National Taiwan University Hospital.

Doctors spent two hours attempting to remove the bottle from the man’s anus. The bottle was successfully removed. According to the hospital, the man has a history of inserting odd objects into his rectum. He required three days in hospital for observation.

Records of the Veterans General Hospital over the past 20 years show that the man’s habit is by no means an unusual one. Other objects retrieved from anuses include flower vases, glass bottles, vibrators and table legs. The largest object ever removed was a bowling pin. One of the hospital’s male patients was admitted on three separate occasions with a different object each time.

A 50 year old man admitted to the emergency department of Kwong Wah Hospital in Kowloon suffering from abdominal pain had used an odd method of treatment for constipation.

According to a paper from the journal Surgery, doctors diagnosed peritonitis, inflammation of the membranes of the abdominal wall and organs. An abdominal x-ray was ordered in an attempt to discover the cause and it showed the shadow of an eel in the man’s rectum.

Emergency surgery was performed. A 50cm eel was discovered biting the splenic flexure of the colon and a 3cm perforation was found over the anterior wall of the man’s rectum. The man lost part of his bowel and required a colostomy.

Further questioning of the patient revealed that he had inserted the live eel into his rectum in an attempt to relieve constipation. He recovered from his ordeal and was released from hospital a week later.

We wonder why it took this lady six months to ask the question ”where did it go?”

When a 27-year-old lady presented at Jaswant Rai Speciality Hospital with a persistent cough, sputum and fever which she’d had for around six months, a chest x-ray revealed a surprising cause. Despite antibiotics and anti-tuberculosis treatments for the previous four months, her symptoms hadn’t improved and subsequent tests were performed.

An x-ray and bronchoscopy revealed an inverted bag like structure in her right lung. The structure was removed with biopsy forceps and was confirmed to be a condom which she had inhaled during oral sex.

We’re thrilled … this Woftam admits he did a stupid thing.

Whilst enjoying a few beers after work and joking about workplace accidents, an 33 year old man picked up a nail gun and shot himself in the head

He told the Sunday Herald newspaper that he and his mates had been “talking about construction site accidents and taking your eye out with a nail gun, and I foolishly put the gun to my head and pulled the trigger.”  He said that he’d turned off the gun’s compressor and taken out its nail cartridge but did not realise there was still enough pressure in the gun to fire a nail. He thought the gun was empty. Apparently NOT!

A 3.2 centimetre nail was fired into his brain, leaving just a small red dot on the surface of his skull. With such a small amount of external evidence, his mates thought the nail gun had fired a blank.

The nail was removed under surgery in a four-hour operation during which a portion of the skull was removed.

We’re not sure what this man was thinking when he tried his best Dr Doolittle impersonation out on the lions, but his audience didn’t appreciate it.

After jumping into an African lion’s enclosure at the Taipei Zoo, a 46 year old man shouted “Jesus Will Save You” at them. They obviously misunderstood what he was preaching in his attempts to convert them to Christianity.

He continued to calmly taunt them with shouts of “Come Bite Me”, a phrase they did understand. He was attacked by a male lion who tore his jacket away, knocked him onto a stone ridge and jumped at him, biting his arm and clawing at his legs. When the lion retreated, the man stood calmly in front of the two lions with his arms outstretched.

He sustained bites to his arms and legs but was able to remove himself from the enclosure on his own after the lions were driven away with water and tranquilised with darts. It is believed they were fed earlier in the day.
