One can only wonder how you manage to become an throat specialist and then botch up your own suicide.
A 46 year old ear, nose and throat specialist from the USA, who was captured in December while living in a tent on the slopes of Mont Blanc, has attempted to stab himself in the throat.
He was captured by Italian authorities after he attracted suspicions that he may have had terrorist links.
With an extravagant lifestyle, mounting debts and civil and medical fraud claims behind him, the surgeon disappeared from his yacht in Greece in 2004. Since that time, he has been wanted by authorities but it seems has been living a mysterious, if at times, luxurious lifestyle in and around Europe.
Police had discovered that the surgeon had been living in a ski resort at the base of Mont Blanc since March or April. He had reportedly shown up in the town in a chauffeur-driven limousine, rented an apartment and spent plenty of cash on expensive clothes and the best outdoor gear money could buy. He became known for his strange behaviour in disappearing for days at a time to Monte Carlo. Eventually, his landlord complained to police when he stopped paying rent in August.
In early December, police received reports that a “strange man” had been spotted living alone in a tent near a mountain refuge close to the Alpine pass Val Ferret. Further investigations by police led them to discover the man’s true identity and an arrest warrant was issued by Interpol. Police officers located the man in a tent approximately 6,000 ft up the mountain. He didn’t struggle when he was apprehended and appeared to be in good physical and mental shape.
He was returned to Aosta for questioning, where he removed a knife from his underwear and stabbed himself in the throat. He was transferred to a hospital in Turin where is recovering.
He is expected to be extradited back to the USA to stand trial.
