Epic Erection

March 27, 2010

4th March 2010, Kolkata, India

A 55 year old man was almost killed by an erection that lasted 21 days. He was forced to undergo emergency surgery to relieve it.

The father of two was suffering from a priapism, triggered by a nervous system disorder, preventing the blood from draining out of the penis. An hour-long surgery was required to drain the blood and relieve the man but unfortunately, he was rendered impotent.

The man sought treatment after 21 days but by then it was too late to prevent permanent injury to the penis. If an erection persists for more than an hour, the blood supply to the penis is reduced, which can cause damage. If circulation remains cut off for a long time, the penis can become gangrenous, leading to systemic poisoning and death of the patient.
