A 40 year old man assaulted two small children with cayenne powder in separate incidents in Sydney.

He approached an 18 month old boy sitting in a pram at a greengrocery store and rubbed chilli powder on his face. When the boy began to cry, the man bolted from the store.

In a separate incident a few weeks later, he assaulted a two year old seated in a pram at a supermarket in the same area, again by smearing chilli powder over his face. When police were called, the man had fled the scene. He was later arrested but while attending the police station, asked to use the toilet and was discovered attempting to dispose of the cayenne powder in the bin.

Neither child was seriously injured, although one toddler was conveyed to hospital by ambulance for treatment.

He was charged with two counts of assault.
