Junior Fight Club

Parents, if you assume you’re sending your child to school to learn, you might reconsider when you read this story.

When two 10 year old boys at a Queens primary school became involved in a verbal argument, their teacher is alleged to have suggested it be settled with a fist fight. Despite injuries being sustained, the stoush was only discovered when a parent of one of the boys overheard his son and his friend, the other participant, discussing which one of them had had the most people cheering him on.

The teacher is alleged to have suggested that one of the students involved in the argument, settle the dispute by taking his aggression out on his friend, a boy aged 9.  A classmate was requested to shut the classroom door, whilst the teacher ordered the rest of the students to make space for the fight. He allegedly told the students to keep mum about the fight and even provided excuses to explain to the school nurse the injuries sustained. To make matters worse, a teachers’ aide was present in the room during the scuffle.

When the fight commenced, both students came out swinging and then wrestling. During the match, the older boy rammed is head into the younger child’s face. The younger boy sustained a cut lip, the older boy a bruised head and possible concussion. Later the same day, when the boys were seen by the school nurse, they used the excuse supplied by the teacher – that they’d bumped heads bending down to pick up the same pencil.

When the truth was uncovered by a parent, it was reported to the school and then the police. The teacher and the aide were charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17 and each face up to a year in prison if convicted. They have been assigned to other duties whilst the investigation takes place. The families of both boys have retained lawyers and intend to file a notice of claim against the city.
