We wonder how pranks get such creative names, don’t you?
A 15 year old boy pushed his 14 year old friend off a wall and into the sea as a prank, known as ‘tombstoning’.

Witnesses said the two boys had been amongst a group of youths gathered at a high sea wall, some wearing wetsuits in readiness for a jump in. The 15 year old was seen to push the victim twice urging him to “go on, get in”. On the second push, he fell in.

The 14 year old victim, struck his head on a concrete plinth, fracturing his skull, neck and rib. He also suffered a punctured lung, a blood clot on the brain and knee and hand injuries. He spent three weeks in hospital, missed a month of school and lost feeling in part of his hand.

The older boy assisted pulling the victim from the water but fled the scene shortly thereafter. His is said to be immensely remorseful, with sleepless nights and was struggling to come to terms with the fact that his actions could have led to the death of his friend. His family have had to move house since the incident and he had been bullied at school.

Tombstoning is a craze where adrenaline seekers plunge into the sea from a great height.

After originally denying the offence, he was convicted of unlawfully and maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm and received a 12 month supervision order as well as ordered to pay compensation of £250.

His victim is making a good recovery.
