Wanted: Small Hands for Medical Procedure

February 7, 2010

Personal Submission – 2010

During a routine interhospital transfer with doctor and nurse escort, my fellow paramedic and I were trading funny stories with the hospital crew. The doctor described a patient who had been brought in by ambulance with an orange stuck in his rectum.

I believe this patient had previous encounters with several emergency departments in the metropolitan area for his knack of putting vegetables into small orifices and being unable to extract them without medical intervention. It seems he was often accompanied by his wife during the ambulance trip to hospital.

In this instance, the doctor was a little perplexed as to how to extract the orange from the man’s butt without having to send him to surgery. Trying several different methods of extraction, he decided it just had to be done manually. He inspected the hands of the nurses in the emergency department and chose the one with the smallest hands. Yep, you guessed it … up the hand went and out came the orange … bit by bit. A truly deserving Woftam nominee … thank heavens for gloves and small hands!
